  1. Concerning the “Royal Coat of Arms in a Shooters Hill garden”. I believe that this might well be taken from the old Shrapnel Barracks site now occupied by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. One of a number of barracks that once existed in Woolwich that have largely been forgotten about, this one was once a station for cavalry and always had a regular line cavalry regiment in occupation for a great many decades. For the period leading up to WW1 it was one of several cavalry depots in the UK and allocated to all of the then Lancer regiments. The stone coats of arms traditionally sat over either the main entrance to the building if it did not have a surrounding wall, or the main gateway if there was a wall and arched entrance.
